What is the difference between Manual and Handling and Handling and Moving people?

1. Focus:

Manual Handling:

Involves lifting, carrying, and moving inanimate objects (like boxes, equipment, etc.).

Handling and Moving People:

Involves physically assisting and transferring individuals who may need help due to health issues, disabilities, or age-related challenges.

2. Training Content:

Manual Handling Training:

Teaches safe lifting techniques, body mechanics, risk assessment for various loads, and the use of mechanical aids (like trolleys).

Handling and Moving People Training:

Focuses on techniques for safely assisting individuals, understanding their needs, using assistive devices (like hoists), and ensuring the comfort and dignity of the person being assisted.

3. Regulatory Framework:

Both areas are governed by health and safety laws, but they are subject to different specific guidelines relevant to their contexts. For instance, the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 relate to inanimate objects, while regulations concerning the care of individuals might include specific guidelines from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and other health and safety bodies focused on the care sector.

4. Risk Factors:

Manual Handling:

Risks primarily involve musculoskeletal injuries due to improper techniques or excessive loads.

Handling and Moving People:

Risks include not only musculoskeletal injuries to the caregiver but also potential harm to the individual being assisted, such as falls or discomfort if not done properly.

5. Work Settings:

Manual Handling:

Common in retail, warehouses, construction, and manufacturing.

Handling and Moving People:

Common in healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, and support services.
