Manual handling is a common activity we all encounter, involving tasks such as lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing. These actions can be complicated by additional movements like climbing or pivoting. Unfortunately, improper manual handling in the workplace leads to over one million lost working days each year, along with significant pain and suffering for those affected.
Implementing correct manual handling techniques can greatly mitigate these risks. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has long recognized the dangers associated with manual handling, as demonstrated by their established regulations and ongoing advisory efforts to promote best practices.
Under these regulations, employers are required to provide their employees with essential health and safety information and training. This must be supplemented, when necessary, with more specific guidance on the risks of manual handling injuries and strategies for prevention.
